The Blou Trein Hike was created by two very good neighbourly friends, Christia Wathaba and Pieta Mount Komati started a brand new, water rich hiking trail between Bloubos Retreat on Wathaba and Pongola Express Railway Coach on Escarp Adventures. This trial gives a new dimension to this spectacular piece of earth which every hiker, who even knows the area well, will appreciate and enjoy anew.
Distance of trail:
It is a 2-day overnight hike
- Day 1 is 9km from Bloubos Retreat to Pongola Express
- Day 2 is 5km back to Bloubos Retreat

Slack pack:
Just like the luxurious Blue Train, our hike is also luxurious with wonderfully comfortable overnight facilities and we transport your luggage to the next stop. We provide the crates for your stuff to be transported.
Backpack:
In case you want to, you can hike with your backpack to prepare for other trails such as the Otter, Fish River Canyon or the new High Five trails.
Bring with:
- Bedding and toiletry bag
- Food and drink
- Torch
- Hat, sunscreen, and swimwear for summer months
- Beanie, scarf, and gloves for winter months
- Hiking boots and clothing
- Container for leftover food (do not take anything from the one place to the other)
- Fire fighters and newspaper
Accommodation:
Between 6 and 10 hikers
Both accommodations have electricity and fully equipped kitchens with fridge and stove.
Bloubos Retreat has a “donkey” geyser for hot water. No private rooms for couples.
At Pongola Express you might share the kitchen and other facilities with another group.
Bloubos retreat:
- Sleeps 10
- Mattresses with fitted sheet provided.

- Main cottage with en suite (shower & toilet) bedroom (queen bed)
- Upstairs with en suite (bath & toilet) 4 single beds
- Free standing Rondawel with 4 single beds (share main house bathroom)
- Electricity but “donkey” geyser for hot water
- Fully equipped kitchen with cutlery and crockery
- Stove, fridge, and microwave
- Outside braai area and nice porch with benches
- Fireplace in the main house lounge
- Firewood provided free of charge.
Pongola express:
- Sleeps 21 (might share with other hikers doing other hikes from here)
- Mattresses provided.
- Old train coach – refurbished and beautiful
- 1 Compartment with 3 beds
- 3 Compartments with 4 beds each
- 3 Compartments with 2 beds each
- 2 showers, 1 bath, 5 toilets
- Electricity
- Fully equipped kitchen with cutlery and crockery
- Stove, fridge, freezer, and microwave
- Dining room coach
- Inside and outside braai area
- Big porch with tables and benches
- Firewood provided for sale.
