West Coast, Western Cape
This is an amazing slack packing guided hike along the West Coast of South Africa from Elandsbay to Strandfontein (Curlew Beach) where long of the forgotten echoes of the Sybille still haunted some caves in the area and the Cape Gannet gather in their thousands to breed on Bird Island at Lamberts bay and home of the Curlew Sandpiper on long out stretched beaches of Strandfontein.
Day 1: Get together at Dooringbaai Guesthouse
Guests arrive at the Base camp at Strandfontein (Curlew Beach) where they will leave their vehicles for the duration of the hike and make themselves at home in comfortable tented accommodation. They will enjoy the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean with a nice sundowner and a hearty supper before going to bed.
Day 2: Take the road to Elandsbay
We will have an early breakfast at 7h00 before leaving for Elands bay where we will start hiking. Take sleeping gear for the night and clothes for the following day. From Elands bay we will hike along the coast for 18km to Steenboksfontein where we will welcomed by our hosts Kitta and Herman. We will then be transported with tractor and trailer to the caves where we will explore the area, walk the labyrinth and admire the view and some koisan artwork. Accommodation here is chalets (2 persons per room sharing). Supper will be Kitta’s treat of a west coast cuisine with coffee and stories of years gone by before we go to bed.
Day 3: Bird Island
After a light breakfast we will then start hiking the 9km to Lamberts bay where we will visit the Bird Island and enjoy a light lunch at Isabella’s restaurant before commencing with out hike for 12km along the trail and beach to Sopieshoogte where our transport will be waiting to take us back to Strandfontein. After a nice hot shower to refresh us we will enjoy the setting sun with something in hand to wash down the dust of the day. Supper will be served before we enjoy a goodnights rest.
