Curlew Trail- Curlew Beach

Curlew Beach, Western Cape

This is an amazing slackpacking guided hike along the West Coast of South Africa from Elandsbay to Strandfontein (Curlew Beach)  where long of the forgotten echoes of the Sybille still haunted some caves in the area and the Cape Gannet gather in their thousands to breed on Bird Island at Lamberts bay and home of the Curlew Sandpiper on long outstretched beaches of Strandfontein.

Guests arrive at the Base camp at Strandfontein (Curlew Beach) where they will leave their vehicles for the duration of the hike and make themselves at home in comfortable tented accommodation. They will enjoy the sunset over the Atlantic ocean with a nice sundowner and a hearty supper before going to bed.

We will have a early breakfast at 7h00 before leaving for Elands bay where we will start hiking. Take sleeping gear for the night and clothes for the following day. From Elands bay we will hike along the coast for 18 km to Steenboksfontein where we will welcomed by our hosts Kitta and Herman. We will then be transported with tractor and trailer to the caves where we will  explore the area, walk the labyrinth and admire the view and some khoisan artwork.  Accomodation here is chalets (2 persons per room sharing). Supper will be Kitta’s treat of a west coast cuisine with coffee and stories of years gone by before we go to bed.

Day 3: After a light breakfast we will then start hiking the 9 km to Lamberts bay where we will visit the Bird Island  and enjoy a light lunch at Isabella’s restaurant before commencing without hike for 12 km along the trail and beach to Sopieshoogte where our transport will be waiting to take us back to Strandfontein.  After a nice hot shower to refresh us we will enjoy  the setting sun with something in hand to wash down the dust of the day. Supper will be served before we enjoy a good night’s rest.

Day 4:

After breakfast 7h00 – 8h00 we will start hiking from base camp to Doornbay all along the cliff ridge for 9 km where we will explore some of the local activities at the old crayfish factory, do some wine tasting and enjoy a hearty lunch. Maybe we might have a view of the longest train is Africa on its way to Saldanna filled with iron ore, before we move back to Strandfontein where we spend the rest of the day exploring the beach and the surrounding areas.

Day 5:

Wake up little Suzy……..breakfast at Tiffany’s ……….and A long, long way to Ebenhaeser. There we will meet our host Mr Alan Dittmer who will escort us with a boat ride and bird watching on the Olifantsriver to where the river opens up in the sea. From there we will hike 8 km along the beach back to base camp where we will celebrate our last night together.
