Knysna Wilderness Hike
The Three Elephants hiking trail
Distance: There are three options available: Black = 9km circular route, White = 8km circular route and the Red = 7km circular route.
Hike: Fair to easy with several steps to climb.
Permits: Permits are obtainable from the Diepwalle Forest Station and have to be kept with you at all times. This will be given to you once you have paid for your entrance.

From Sedgefield it is 31km to the R339 Uniondale turnoff which is 4km outside Knysna travelling towards Plettenburg Bay. Turn left at R339 Uniondale and follow the road for 15.5km. This road becomes a gravel road for approximately 10km. Take the Diepwalle turnoff to the right and continue for 1km to the Diepwalle Forestry Station.
The starting point. We decided to hike the White Elephant Trail.
Few meters from the starting point the are tented timber decks with there own braai and ablution facilities.
The black sign with the two footprints is part of the Outeniqua Hiking Trail. From this sign you will turn right off the gravel road into the forest. Different species of mushrooms which can be found along the trail.
After this 4km sign one can year a stream flowing in the distance. This is a suitable resting spot where one can have something to eat and drink. The river water is fine to drink even though it may be discoloured.
Once rested you will ascend a very slippery path into the forest.The 5km sign. Shortly you will be back on a gravel road and you will cross over a bridge.Then you will enter into the forest again where you will ascend gradually for about a 100m.This is the end of the hiking trail which brings you to the Diepwalle Forest Station. The Diepwalle Hut is for the people participating in the Outeniqua Hiking Trail.
