Manukuza is blessed as its area of our operation spans over two magnificent Big 5 locations.
The first being the Balule Nature Reserve which forms part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) within the Greater Kruger National Park and the second, the Greater Makalali Nature Reserve (GMNR) renowned for its conservation efforts.
This iconic landscape has for hundreds of years been regarded as South Africa’s premier Big 5 game viewing area. Our remote location isolates us from the outside world and allows you to become totally immersed in an authentic bushveld environment where the ‘hustle and bustle’ of city life is forgotten.
Walking Trails in these wild places are unique, the realisation of being exposed to natures elements awakens your senses and emotions. You become aware of your surroundings and the forgotten silence becomes real – you are able to unwind and escape.
Our Greater Kruger walking trails, whether it be on foot or in 4×4, meander along these important water sources allowing us to explore and interpret whatever we encounter. Although many large mammals rely on these rivers, we do not focus on the Big 5 and they are not guaranteed.
However, what is assured is an outing which will expose you to some of the most beautiful areas unseen by many and memories that will be spoken of for years to come.
Backpack Trail
Backpack trails are a minimum of 3 nights / 4 days. Longer trails can be arranged. Explore wild Big 5 wilderness on foot. Sleeping in tents on the banks of the Kruger. Sleep in tents at night, unfenced and inside big 5 territory.
Location & General Information
Manukuza Backpack Trail
The Manukuza Backpack Trail follows the game paths & river systems found in the Greater Kruger National Park and surrounding historic wildlife sanctuaries.
The trailests will be absorbed into an extremely remote and exclusive piece of Big 5 land. These locations isolate us from the outside world and allows you to become totally immersed in an authentic bushveld environment where the ‘hustle and bustle’ of city life is forgotten.
Trailests need to be fit and in good health. Our Wilderness Backpack trails are a self-sustained adventure guided by two trails guides. You will however be responsible for all your required gear. Nights are spent under the stars at a location chosen by your guides.

- Trails are self-catering.
- Trails are a minimum of 3 nights / 4 days.
- Trails are booked for groups with up to 8 participants.
- All participants are expected to take turns on night duty around a small fire.
- Cooking is done on gas stoves.
- Minimum age of 16 years old.
