Bateleur Nature Reserve caters for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts like hikers, mountain bikers, stargazers, birders, butterfly and tree lovers.

Explore and discover clear rock pools, unspoiled plains covered in wildlife, deep ravines, and rugged hills with magnificent views. Our wildlife ranges from giraffe, zebra, eland, blue wildebeest, sable antelope and bless-buck, to smaller game like warthogs, jackal, bush pigs, birds and insects,

Bateleur is well-known for its accredited Stamvrug Hiking Trails, consisting of a network of about 10 different routes, which cater for beginners, as well as seasoned hikers.  Relax around a campfire at one of our self-catering cottages, spacious farmhouses, or hikers’ basecamps, or cool off in the rock pools, the swimming pool or a farm dam.

Please note that Bateleur is not a pleasure resort and we offer no additional recreational or entertainment facilities, such as slippery slides, shops or restaurants. If unspoiled landscapes, wildlife, boisterous birds, solitude, and magnificent sunsets don’t tickle your fancy, you may prefer a visit to Sun City.

The Waterberg is a summer rainfall area and is classified as maralria-free.  Summer days are warm to hot (low humidity) with thunderstorms, while winter days are mild, sunny and mostly dray.

Bateleur Nature Reserve is situated 25km northwest of Warmbaths (Bela Bela) and 25km west from Modimolle (Nylstroom) on a plateau in the Waterberg.

After reporting to reception, you are on your own to enjoy the tranquility the reserve. Once settled at the accommodation of your choice, please restrict driving to an absolute minimum.

Stone Cottage is a cosy self-catering cottage built from the stone found in the environment. The cottage has a spacious open-plan layout, which includes a lounge, kitchenette and sleeping area with a double bed and one single bed. It is fully equipped for self-catering with linen and towels, crockery, cutlery, braai utensils and basic electrical appliances including a microwave oven and kettle. The living area opens onto a veranda with a panoramic view across the reserve and the Waterberg mountains in the distance; a perfect setting for sundowners before the evening braai. The en-suite bathroom has a shower, as well as a bathtub with a window from where visitors may see a giraffe nibbling the leaves of a nearby tree, a herd of impala or an inquisitive gecko peeping through the window. The cottage is wheelchair friendly with a ramp and an “open” shower to allow for easy access.

Mispel Cottage is quaint and comfortable, but not luxurious. It is fully equipped for self-catering and sleeps up to six people. It consists of two bedrooms en-suite with showers. The open-plan layout includes a kitchenette, as well as a dining and living area with a cosy fireplace for cold nights. The back porch leads to a secluded braai area, while the front porch, overlooks the upper wetlands with a beautiful view over the Waterberg mountains; an ideal setting for sundowners. Mispel Cottage shares a swimming pool with Mountain Villa #4.

Carved into the mountainside with breath-taking views of the plateau, the upper wetland and typical Waterberg mountain scenery, lies this spacious villa. A large dining room/lounge and a spacious family- or conference room, all open up onto balconies overlooking the plateau and mountains in the distance. The Villa has five bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as an outside bathroom complex serving the swimming pool area. This is the ideal destination for large family groups (sleeping 12). It can also serve as a small and affordable conference venue. Conferences and workshops for, in excess of 20 people, can be arranged at the Villa. This quaint two-bedroom cottage used to be an old farm school dating back to the Anglo-Boer War (late 19th century), which was later converted into a small farmhouse. The cottage sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms and is fully equipped for self-catering with crockery, cutlery, cooking and basic kitchen appliances, as well as braai utensils. There is an open fireplace in the lounge/dining room, which leads to a stoep with a braai area. From this secluded cottage, several short hikes can be enjoyed. Situated close to the Lily Dam and the Kloof Bird Hide, it is the perfect spot for birders.

Located on the top of a hill, Farmhouse provides a panoramic view of the surrounding area and the Waterberg mountains. This spacious three-bedroomed house with wrap-around veranda sleeps 11 people in three bedrooms plus a fourth bedroom in an adjacent flatlet*. The main bedroom has a double bed and one single bed with an en-suite bathroom. The remaining two bedrooms have two and three beds respectively and share a full bathroom. The spacious lounge/dining room leads to a modern kitchen, which is fully equipped for self-catering, as well as braai utensils. The house has easy access to a large concrete farm dam, which serves as a swimming pool. *The adjacent flatlet sleeps three people. It is private and cosy with one double bed, one single bed, and an en-suite bathroom. The small kitchenette is fully equipped for self-catering. The flatlet has its own veranda and braai area.
