De Wildt Adventure Trails & Cheetah Lodge is situated approximately 30 minutes from Pretoria and 45 minutes from Johannesburg close to Hartbeespoort.

The harder the climb the more spectacular the reward with scenic views of Hartbeespoort and surrounds.

Escape from reality in our beautiful, tranquil picnic area with amazing braai facilities, order your braai packs, side dishes, or other dishes from our menu. 

Go rustic at our rustic camp sites or indulge in the luxury which our Cheetah Lodge brings.

Enjoy a delicious meal and ice-cold beverage after your hike at the Bush Kitchen before you head home.

They opened the Kiepersol trail in November 2019 – one year ago they only had this trail which was barely 5km of trail!  They also offered the 12.5km guided Groenklip hike.  They now offer a huge variety of different trails each catering for a different type of fitness and technicality.

The Trial Options:

  1. Kiepersol Trail – 5km or 7.5km (easy – moderate)
  2. Peglerae Trail – 6.5km or 9km (moderate)
  3. Ktatu Loop – 12.5km (moderate to difficult)
  4. Dinaneni Loop – 12.5km (moderate)
  5. Euphorbia Trail 21km – (Difficult)
  6. Wilde Sering Overnight Hike – 27km (moderate to difficult)
  7. Wilde Hond Trails – 4km, 6km, 8.5km & 12.5km (easy to difficult)
  8. Brown Hyena, – 25km (difficult)

Kiepersol Trail. (5km or 7.5km)
  • Duration: 1½ hours to 2 hours
  • Highest Point: 1442m
  • Elevation Gain: 251m
  • Elevation Loss: 249m
  • Rating: Easy to Moderate
  • This trail is pet friendly.

Our Kiepersol 5km trail is ideal for families with young children, beginners, and intermediate hikers. An add-on to the Kiepersol 5km is the 2.5km Groenklip loop that makes it a 7.5km trail.

Groenklip as the locals call it, is a big rock covered in green moss at one of the seasonal waterfalls. The Groenklip loop introduces you to the Magaliesberg so that you know what to expect if you are ready to take on the longer more advanced trails on offer and it you take to the seasonal waterfalls.

An easy hike, that gives you views of nature and a hiking experience without climbing the mountain.

Peglarae Trail (6.5 km, 9km)
  • Duration: 2 hours to 3 hours
  • Highest Point: 1616m
  • Elevation Gain: 416m
  • Elevation Loss: 416m
  • Rating: Moderate
  • This trail is Pet friendly

Named after Aloe Peglerae. These plants flower in winter between June and August. This trail takes you to the top of the Magalies right on the border between the Gauteng and North West border. What is unique on this trail is that it gives you the opportunity to be on and out of the mountain before the summer heat.

It’s a moderate trail that is most popular for families with children, which gives you a view of Hartbeespoort dam and surroundings.

It is an all-out experience, you get to climb the mountain, experience the views, see the season waterfalls and rockpools even at a beginner level.

Dinaneni Trail (12.5km)
  • Duration: 3 hours to 4 hours
  • Highest Point: 1661m
  • Elevation Gain: 508m
  • Elevation Loss: 508m
  • Rating: Moderate

This is our easier 12.5km on offer this section of the mountain takes you through grasslands and huge rock formations and old “kraals”. Towards the east where you turn near Senteck towers. These “kraals” date back to the late Iron age from 1300AD to 1820AD. Ancestors of the stonewall builders can be traced from northern regions of Botswana.

Dinaneni was one of the most important Ndebele settlements which was situated at the foot of the Magalies mountain, close to Wonderboom and served as a military kraal and residence of the king.

Ktatu Loop Trail (12.5km)
  • Duration: 3½ hours to 5 hours
  • Highest Point: 1616m
  • Elevation Gain: 595m
  • Elevation Loss: 595m
  • Rating: Moderate to Difficult

The Ktatu is the more difficult 12.5km that we have on offer. Having a reputation as one of the tougher 12.5km in and around Gauteng. This trail takes you to the west past the power lines at Muizen nek closer towards Hartbeespoort. Ktatu is one of the first names for Zilkaatsnek, having been named during the Ndebele invasion during 1827 to 1837, it is one of many names besides “ Uitvals Nek” and “Nitral’s Nek”.

Euphorbia Loop Trail (18km)
  • Duration: 5 hours to 7 hours
  • Highest Point: 1661m

  • Elevation Loss: 786m
  • Rating: Difficult

This is our second toughest trail which is a combination of all the loops. When you reached the summit you hike approximately 4km on the northern side of the mountain towards Senteck towers and 8km back on the southern side of the Magalies with magnificent views of the Hartbeespoort dam and 4km back on the Northern side. This gives 16km on top of the mountain.

due to the high elevation this trail is popular among trail runners and hikers training for multiple day hikes.

Named after the dwarf Euphorbia, Euphorbia schinzii. An indigenous plant which grows in crevices and hides from the sun and wind. The Euphorbia is armed with sharp spines and blooms yellow flowers in the spring

Wilde Sering Overnight Hike

The Wild Sering is a base camp multiday hike where day 1 is a combination of the Peglerae, Ktatu and Wilde Sering loops towards Hartbeespoort dam and day 2 that has the same footprint as the Dinaneni 12.5km but gives you a new experience as it is just marked in the opposite direction.  These 2 trails are measured from the picnic area and can be done as a day hikes. You just need to add 1km.

The Wild Seringa, Burkea Africana, has its characteristic shape as a result of its leaves which grow on branches that form horizontal levels.

Wilde Hond Trail – By appointment only

The wild dog is our newest trail which takes you to Zilkaats nek with magnificent views of Hartbeespoort Dam, when on this hike, look out for the low flying vultures which call the Magalies their home. The Wild Dog trail is a historically significant trail where you pass the remains of British sangars, zig zag block house supply roads and the remains of 4 British block houses from the Anglo Boer war between 1899 and 1902.  The Wild dog is known for its strong sense of social justice and a charitable nature.

Brown Hyena Trail

This is our toughest trail with an elevation of more than 1150m . This trail can be done as a 2 day backpack or slackpack trail. This trail takes you to the very end of the mountain at Zilkaatsnek and is a combination of the Euphorbia and The Wild Dog trail at the Cheetah lodge.

This trail was built for trail runners and multi day hikers. 

The Brown hyena is a solitary scavenger that lives in a den and is uses scent as a primary form of communication unlike other hyena.

Rustic Overnight Shelters

The rustic overnight shelters at De Wildt Adventure Trails are big enough for a 2 man tent or 1 bunker bed.  You have the choice of bringing your own tent and gear to setup in the shelter or request a bunker bed with a mattress and fitted sheet, you provide the rest.

  • Min 2 and max 16
  • 2 hikers per shelter
  • Ablution with hot water
  • 1 bunk bed or tent per shelter

Please provide the following for camping in the shelter:

  • Camping gear
  • Own matrass, sleeping bag, pillow
  • Own cooking utensils
  • Own cutlery, crockery
  • Own toilet paper

  • There is a small shop for ice and small necessities.
  • Lovely big farm dam to swim in.
  • Braai packs and meals with sides can be ordered from The Bush Kitchen (pre-order and payment essential)
