Heuningland is a little piece of heaven between Beaufort West and Fraserburg on the Oukloof Road.
We border on the south-western side of the Karoo National Park. For years we have been dreaming to establish a self-sufficient lifestyle here. After many other adventures, the time has come to leave the ordinary road maps and move over to the heart map of the Karoo.
The name Heuningland has been chosen because of what “honey” symbolises for us:
Heuningland is guarded and cherished by the mountains, and is fed by many memories, two strong boreholes and a great dream. The hiking trips will be the first steps towards our vision to settle here permanently.
One cannot go back to the time when millions of springbucks trekked over the vast Karoo plains, but the earth here still remembers. The memories of the earth are stowed in the ironstones of the Great Karoo. Come and sit on one and remember with us.
The Great Karoo
The Great Karoo in all its simplicity, with its secrets and stories, is now accessible to everybody who needs to stop the clock. When one becomes silent long enough in these spaces, you can hear the heartbeat of the earth once again. It is a place where time does not exist.
We are proudly South African and have a passion for the Great Karoo, its people, unique vegetation and animals. We are passionate conservationists of nature and would like to share the knowledge acquired through years of travel and touring experience by offering hiking trails, Karoo tours as well as tailor made safaris to any destination in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique & Botswana.
About Douwe Vlok
Your Tour Guide
Douwe is a native from Beaufort West in the Great Karoo and grew up in the veld. He comes from an interesting and colourful background with more than 25 years of experience as a seasoned tour guide including San Parks and the West Coast National Park, He is a formally trained field guide (FGASA Level 2) and is qualified to lead hiking tours in the big five areas. He has travelled all over the world, of which 4.5 years spent in Paraguay where he managed a large cattle farm, teeming with game and birds like macaws and parrots.
His journey as tour guide includes being a river guide on the Orange River, Overlanding, 21 days from Cape Town to Namibia to Botswana and Victoria Falls as well as being a jeep-jockey at 6-star lodges and hiking guide at the Oystercatcher Trail in Mossel Bay. Douwe and Liezl began Heuningland Karoo Tours in 2016 which amongst others focuses on niche tours in the Karoo.
His passion and knowledge for the veld is highly contagious and you will leave any tour with enough information and memories to last a lifetime.
