Manukuza Safaris Primitive Trail
Balule Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger, Limpopo
On the Manukuza Primitive Trail, trailests will explore big 5 game roaming free from one of two locations in either the Balule Nature Reserve which forms part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) within the Greater Kruger National Park or the Greater Makalali Name Reserve (GMNR).
Our primitive trail takes trailests back to their core. We pack a light load on our backs and let the bush guide us as we track animals and find our way to an overnight sleeping spot.
There, we start a fire, dig for water and let the sounds of the bush put us to sleep under the brightly lit stars. Trailests will need to be able to hike several kilometers with a pack on their back. Therefore they should be in good health.
The group will be accompanied and guided by two armed and accredited trails guides. The guides will educate and share their knowledge and experience as we progress on the trail.
You will need to bring your own gear and food.

All vehicles are parked in a secure, designated area at the trail’s starting point, where they will remain safely until our return.
15:30 – 17:30
Leave for trail
After parking the vehicles, we gather for a thorough safety briefing to ensure everyone feels comfortable and prepared for the adventure ahead. From there, we set off on foot into the wilderness, walking at a relaxed pace and immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of nature on the way to our first camp for the night.

Physical Requirements & Fitness
Primitive trails are a deeper, more immersive wilderness experience. Each day involves carrying your own backpack with personal gear, food, and sleeping equipment as we move between remote campsites. Walks generally last around 5 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon, depending on terrain, temperature, and wildlife encounters. A reasonable level of fitness and comfort with rough, uneven bush terrain is essential. Our guides adjust the pace to suit the group, ensuring the journey remains engaging and rewarding for everyone.
Accommodation On primitive trails, there are no permanent facilities or camps. Each night is spent at a simple, temporary campsite chosen by the guides — often beneath the stars or beside a fire.
Meals & Drinks On primitive trails, guests are fully self-sufficient, preparing their own meals on small gas cookers they bring along. Guests carry their own water and snacks for the walks, with drinking water available at designated points along the trail to ensure each day’s needs are met.
Safety & Wildlife All walks are led by our experienced guides, who ensure safety protocols are followed at all times. Guests are asked to follow their instructions to stay safe around wildlife and in the bush. With deep knowledge of the environment, our guides provide both a secure and immersive wilderness experience, helping guests appreciate the sights and sounds of the African bush.
Personal Items & Gear
On primitive trails, guests are responsible for all their own gear, carrying their personal bags throughout the day. Guests can refer to our gear page for a full checklist or contact us for advice
Communication & Connectivity Mobile coverage is very limited, and there is no Wi-Fi on the trail. Pockets of signal may be available, but connectivity cannot be relied on.
