Northern Drakensberg, Bergville
Discover genuine hospitality at our Northern Drakensberg mountain retreat in one of the most tranquil and beautiful settings in Southern Africa.
Come discover space, luxury and tranquility when you visit Montusi.
Witness the natural splendour and romantic ambience of this Northern Drakensberg mountain retreat.
Situated midway between Johannesburg and Durban, Montusi Mountain Lodge is one of the few destinations with a panoramic vista of the Drakensberg’s most famous feature, the Amphitheatre escarpment.
Enjoy luxury Drakensberg accommodation in the most beautiful natural setting where you can be as active or relaxed as you choose.
Montusi Mountain Lodge was established in June 2000 by the Carte family and has created a unique opportunity for guests to indulge in the freedom of the wild Drakensberg experience.
Montusi believes that preservation is an integral part of conservation in the Northern Drakensberg. With this in mind, invasive wattle trees have been eradicated and our estate has been rehabilited by planting thousands of indigenous trees.
This effort has culminated in the indigenous forests, and resultant indigenous birdlife, flourishing. Additionally, this has seen the return of Mountain Reedbuck, Vaal Rhebuck, Bushbuck and the elusive Eland that have repopulated this area once inhabited by the Bushmen.
This is an idyllic escape to space, comfort, and peace.

Lodge guests have tables reserved automatically, but those staying in the self-catering cottages or elsewhere need to make a booking at least a day in advance.
Come and join us to find out what all the fuss is about!
Breakfast
Breakfast at Montusi is the best way to start a Drakensberg day.
Peer over your steaming cup of coffee into the vast expanse of mountains from both the dining room and Phumleni.
In summer, breakfast begins at 7am allowing the early-birds to fuel up and hit the trails before the heat gets too much. With a 10am closing time, later lie-ins are easily accommodated too.
Breakfast includes the cold buffet of fresh and healthy options, as well as the full traditional “English” breakfast available to order. Croissants, and other pastries, cold meats and cheeses are also on offer for the more European tastes. A signature breakfast dish, which changes daily, is a highlight of the breakfast menu.
Guests requiring breakfast outside the usual breakfast time (7am in summer and 8am in winter to 10am) may order breakfast in suite or a packed breakfast for the road.
Lunch
Light lunches are available daily between 12:30 and 14:00.
The menu includes something for everyone from deliciously healthy and fresh salads to hearty steaks and burgers.
Some ingredients come right from our own veggie garden!
Whether you’re keen for a small snack toasted sandwich or something more substantial, the lunchtime offering will not disappoint.
Guests who are out and about enjoy our excellent packed lunch options, while special picnics at the secluded Mpopomeni Picnic Area are a highlight of a romantic Montusi getaway.
Dinner
One of the best parts of a day at Montusi is settling down for a well-deserved dinner.
The dinner menu is a set, 4-course affair with a festival of flavours and textures. With fantastically fresh ingredients, the chef creates something magical for all tastes. Even those with dietary restrictions enjoy a variety of dishes on their specifically created menus.
From the home-made bread and home-grown garden salad, through the starter, soup, main course, dessert and cheese board, Montusi guests are treated to delicious taste adventures and comfortable old favorites.
A few of the highlights include Panko Crumbed Mushrooms; Cauliflower & Capsicum Soup; Braised Bush Pig Shank Bourginon; Butternut Squash Salad with Goats Cheese, Pumpkin Seeds, Onion Marmalade, Arugula Leaves, Pecans and Roasted Chickpeas; Lavender Cheesecake, and Salted
Caramel Popcorn Ice-cream.
