Mosemane Guest Farm and Hiking Trails

Mosemane Guest Farm, is an eco-friendly, self-catering lodge at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Eastern Freestate. Here you can experience adventure on the Hiking or Mountain biking trail.
With the Lodge being an eco-friendly lodge, all the geysers are gas and solar and electricity is generated by solar power. The old barn was renovated and converted into a lovely 5-bedroom Lodge (all en-suite) which can accommodate up to 17 people. All the bedrooms as well as the communal lounge area have fireplaces and hair dryers.
The backpackers can accommodate up to 7 guests. The backpacker’s room have a lovely under-cover deck overlooking the farm and the mountain, with the bathrooms (6 showers and 6 toilets) downstairs.
2 Enclosed braai areas and 1 Boma adds to the uniqueness of this Lodge.
The 3 kitchens are all equipped with microwave ovens, gas stoves and fridges.
Hiking:
Try our challenging but beautiful 9km hiking trail as well as an easier 5km trail. Starting out at the Lodge, you will hike along the stream, through grasslands and dongas. The 9km trail goes into the dongas and up the mountain and has surprises around each bend with the rock cliffs and rock formations. Climb to the rock overhangs and admire the amazing views.
There are ladders and chains to help you negotiate the steep mountain section of the hike, which passes ancient caves called “Owls eyes” (so called after their appearance), “Cathedral”, several natural showers and a Fairy garden on route to the lookout of the “Old-Old people”.
The Trails and activities:
- Enjoy the 9 km hiking trail designed and built by Discovery Trails. The trail has its ups and downs with surprises around each bend. You will find the Owl’s Eyes, Cathedral, several natural showers and a fairy garden on route to the outlook of the “old-old people”. There are several places where you will feel the need just to be quiet and to experience the forces of nature.
- For the more adventures hiker there is a geo-caching trail — a new way of treasure hunting on the rest of the farm Beatrix. This new way of discovery will take you past the fossil and through a unique
- Bring your mountain bike and enjoy a tough 16km scenic ride covering a different part of the farm.
- Mosamane has been declared a Birder Friendly site. Simply spend you day bird watching in the different habitats on the farm or on birds’ routes in the area.
- You may want to do nothing …… enjoying the stillness and tranquility that the Eastern Free State has to offer.
Climate:
During summer you can expect maximum temperatures of 32 °C with a cool breeze as the sun sets in the evening. “Summer” also means 4 seasons in one day, with heavy thunder, lightning and showers. The winter climate is more predictable with maximum temperatures of 20 °C and average minimum temperatures of 4 °C. The days are sunny and active people will have to take off all the woollies. Frost is not uncommon, and snow does occur every few years.
Base camp facilities:
In addition to the previously mentioned facilities, the base camp also provides:

- Two bags of wood for social fire
(Freezer facilities are available at farm residence).
What should I bring with?
- Insect repellent and antihistamine cream for insect bites

Optional services:
The additional optional services as indicated below should be confirmed during booking or at least one week before arriving at Mosamane.
Depending on how you want to spend your days, the following services at an additional cost can be provided:
- Picnic Lunch
- Breakfast and/or Dinner
- Booking to visit art galleries at Rosendal
- Booking for dinner and show (scheduled once per month) in Rosendal’s Theatre
Mountain Biking:
If you enjoy mountain biking, you can try out the tough but scenic 16km route which takes you to a different part of the farm. Should you prefer to make it a longer ride, you can add the farm road or part of the hiking route to your biking route. This will add an additional 5-6km to your route. The mountain bike route takes you up and over the mountain and into the valley where you will pass some cattle, bless-buck and other small game.
Relaxing:
If none of the above appeal to you, simply sit under a tree or on the veranda of the Lodge and soak in the landscapes which is home to a great variety of creatures, including the Secretary bird, Bald Iris and the Mosamane ground squirrel.
